Mylee’s the massive kit is easily the best at-home gel nail kit I tested. It’s a treasure trove of Mylee products, including even an agate coaster for mixing polishes and perfecting nail art. I chose 'the it girl' selection of shades, which came with all the pinks and reds that I could need to get going. The first real selling point I noticed was that you can choose your own shades.
One of my favourite parts of this kit was the speed at which I was able to achieve a salon-worthy manicure. The cuticle remover helped me skip any dangerous nipping, and each coat cured even quicker than the recommended 60 seconds – but I left my hands under the lamp for the full length of time, just in case. The whole manicure from start to finish took just over half an hour, which is a lot less than I’d sit in the seat at the salon. The lamp was easy to set up, with its magnetic base, and did a great job at staying on, even when I wiggled my hands around.
If you’re looking for a gel nail kit that you won’t need to top up anytime soon, this is a straightforward and easy-to-use option. When gel nails were still new on the beauty scene, Orly was a staple in many salons. Known for its professional-grade products, it’s no surprise that the brand remains a favourite among nail technicians today. Having been impressed with Orly in the past, I was eager to put the brand to the test again – but I was surprised to find that its gel nail range offers relatively limited variety.
The LED lamp is more robust and bulky than the others I tested, making it perfect for those looking to invest in a salon-grade lamp, or perhaps even train in professional manicures. The lamp has been designed for use with all gel products, including builder, and features a low-heat mode for sensitive nails, which is beneficial.
Unlike some other lamps that took a while to cure, Orly’s LED lamp was powerful, fast, and ensured the polish was cured evenly. My total manicure time was rather speedy at around 20 minutes, and I encountered no hiccups when curing. My only bugbear is that it’s pricey, especially considering it arrives without polishes and tools.

A viral product, and with good reason, 14 Day Manicure's builder gel kit lives up to the hype. Included in the kit is a pale pink builder gel, along with a primer and top coat, as well as the tools you’ll need to get you started. If you’re looking to add colour on top or change up your builder, 14 Day Manicure has plenty of others to choose from. For example, I tried out the brand’s gentle gel polish on top of the builder, which included the most gorgeous, opaque butter yellow (£11, 14daymanicure.com), which worked well on top of the builder.
Thanks to the HEMA-free formula, I was able to use this on sensitive, allergy-prone nails with no reaction. Unlike some builder gels that will settle unevenly on your nail beds unless you achieve the perfect apex (unlikely unless you’re a pro), these polishes and the lamp ensured a smooth, even finish in less than an hour. The lamp also features a low-heat mode, which, paired with the Hema-free formulas, is perfect for allergy-prone nails.
The brand’s guide to application is easy to understand, and when followed correctly, results in a manicure that I’d be happy to pay for in a salon. With well-prepped nails, this builder gel lasts at least two weeks before chipping or peeling.

If your nails are weak and brittle but you still want to have them painted, I’d recommend Manucurist’s LED green flash kit. The brand has replaced harsh ingredients found in many bottles with more natural, planet-friendly alternatives. The plant-based polishes are free from methacrylate monomers, which have been known to irritate. It also features patented KeraHCE+ technology in the vitaminised base coat to not only keep the nails damage-free, but also nourish them during application.
Easy to apply, the semi-permanent green flash polishes are slightly different to your typical gel nails. It has a thinner finish, making it feel more like a regular polish, but with the signature shine of a gel.
The lamp is foldable and easy to prop up anywhere, which is handy, but I found that each coat took a little longer to cure than was suggested. The first few took around 90 seconds to two minutes, but the top coat needed around three minutes of curing time. Still, we were finished in around 25 minutes – from prep to our final stroke of top coat. The slim lamp causes no warm sensation to the nailbeds, indicating a much softer bonding process.
In comparison to other gel nails, the removal of the polish was easy, thanks to the included solution that sees the polish wipe straight off. A great option if you need to give your nails some TLC.

If you’re looking for something that you can take with you on the go, I found the Nails Inc gelLED lamp to be the best portable option. Small and wireless, the lamp is easy to pop in your bag when travelling, so you won’t have to worry about your manicure letting you down (but if you pair it with Nails Inc polishes, that shouldn’t happen). The lamp is impressive for its size, and doesn’t waver in its curing abilities. After 60 seconds, your nails are strong and shiny.
You won’t fit your whole hand under the lamp, though, just a finger or two at a time, so it’s better suited to touch-ups and travelling rather than an at-home pamper session. Yet it is incredibly easy to use and gives you the chance to control exactly where you need to shine the LED light. When I used it to carry out a full hand’s worth of touch-ups, it took around 20 minutes. It’s worth noting that Nails Inc doesn’t offer a huge amount of colour choices, but there are plenty of staple colours to choose from – rich reds and bubblegum pinks.

How I tested and selected the best gel nail kits
With the EU regulations on gel nail kits having changed, I took my role of testing each product very seriously and had to revisit some products to ensure they were TPO-free.
I spent six months testing a variety of gel nail kits. I started with a long list of kits before whittling down to the best five, removing those that didn’t live up to their claims.
When conducting my research, I noted what’s included, the shades, price, ease of use and how long the mani lasted. Specifically, I considered the following factors:
Are gel nail kits safe?
Gel manicures have come under fire of late, with people claiming the products can trigger allergic reactions. The British Association of Dermatologists (BAD) issued a warning, adding emphasis on at-home kits being “riskier because of the lack of experience the public has with these products”.
To help clear up any confusion, Dr Yuliya Krasnaya, specialist dermatologist at Evolution Aesthetics Clinic, told The Independent: “UV lamps emit ultraviolet radiation, and extended exposure can present risks to the skin, such as the possibility of skin damage and an elevated risk of skin cancer. To err on the side of caution, I recommend applying a broad-spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen, limiting exposure time and air drying your nails to protect your hands from UV rays.”
Regarding the more recent allergy concerns, Dr Krasnaya added: “Though uncommon, skin irritations or allergies can arise from chemicals in gel nail products or UV light exposure during manicures. Sensitivity to the base coat, colour gel, or topcoat components may cause redness or itching”. So, she recommends shopping from reputable, trustworthy brands to try and reduce potential concerns as much as possible.
How to remove gel polish at home
Luckily, most of these kits come complete with removal solutions that can be soaked onto a cotton pad and left on your nails for a couple of minutes – simply wrap each finger in tin foil to keep the pads in contact with your nail. If that isn’t available, though, you can go to your closest chemist and pick up a bottle of acetone that will do the same job. If you’re still struggling to get the polish off, you can also gently buff the product away while reapplying the removal solution.
How to fix gel nails that have lifted at home
The golden rule for any gel manicure is to not pick your nails, even if they’re starting to peel and chip. Now that you have an at-home kit, you can quickly remove them and start again, ensuring your nails are nice and healthy. However, if it’s only one pesky peel and you’re in a time crunch, the experts suggest simply filing it back and applying a similar colour of regular polish on top until you have time to sort it out properly.
Are gel nail kits worth it?
With the average salon set of gel nails costing anywhere between £25 (if you’re lucky) and £50, investing in an at-home gel nail kit will undoubtedly save you money further down the line. From experience, doing your gel nails personally can take longer than your manicurist’s swift 45-minute in-and-out service, and we’ve found ourselves attending to our nails for nigh on two hours previously. That said, once you’re in the swing of the routine – you’ve taught yourself the dos and don’ts of cuticle care, nail prep, etc – we’d argue you can get your speed up to around one hour. The main pro? You can tend to your paws in the comfort of your own home in your jammies or comfies.
What’s important to remember when doing your own gel nails at home?
