9/11 after 25 years: How NASCAR went back racing following September 11 attacks

On September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania killed 2,977 people and transformed life across the United States. By the end of the day, the twin towers and surrounding structures of the World Trade Center were completely destroyed, the Pentagon was badly damaged, and United Airlines Flight 93 crashed in Pennsylvania after passengers and crew attempted to retake the aircraft.

The impacts of that dark day reverberated through every aspect of American life – including the tight-knit community in NASCAR. NASCAR's premier series was set to race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway on September 16, but series officials called off the event. The race was rescheduled for the very end of the season on November 23.
