Fraudsters are circulating WhatsApp messages claiming to offer updated salary details under the 8th Pay Commission. These messages typically promise access to a “salary calculator” and urge recipients to download an APK file to check their revised pay. However, authorities have warned that these files are malicious and designed to compromise users’ mobile devices.
The Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), which functions under the Ministry of Home Affairs, has flagged the scam and issued a public alert. In a post on X, I4C cautioned that government employees are being misled through WhatsApp messages that claim to reveal how much their salary will increase once the 8th Pay Commission is implemented. The message instructs users to download an APK file. Once installed, the application allegedly gives fraudsters direct access to the victim’s mobile phone.
