West Nile virus contributed to the death of an 86-year-old Shelby County man, the Shelby County Health Department said in a case reported Sept. 30. He was the county's first known human case of the year.
The death comes as the Illinois Department of Public Health's West Nile surveillance page lists 50 human cases and three deaths statewide as of Sept. 30. The virus has been found in people, mosquitoes, or animals in 59 Illinois counties.
