8 Shows To Watch This December 2024 If You’re Burnt Out From All That Socialising

We’ve done it, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve made it to December. Somehow, it simultaneously feels like aeons ago and yesterday that I was writing about new streaming shows to watch in January. Yet, here we are.

Now that we’re at the end of the year, with holidays, BBQs and celebrations looming, I say it calls for more couch time to help you unwind before the social events. So, here are a few suggestions to get you started on your holiday break-watching schedule no matter what your favourite genres or interests are.

The Best New Shows Coming To Streaming Platforms In August 2024

1. The Jury: Death On The Staircase

It’s not every day that the SBS (a “serious” broadcaster) commissions a reality show so I just knew that this was going to be good. The Jury: Death on a Staircase has an absolutely fascinating premise, sure to speak to true crime fanatics.

The SBS Original is a five-part series which sees a real manslaughter court case be re-enacted. The difference? There’s a whole new set of Aussie jurors. The 12 jurors — who represent a diverse selection of Aussie society — know absolutely nothing about the case, learning about the intricate ins and outs of the crime and debating the outcome as if they were the real jurors.

The real question is, will the new jurors come to the same conclusion as the original jurors?

I’ve got to be honest, I’ve been saving this one to binge when all of the episodes are out. That time has come, my friends.

You can watch episodes one to four of The Jury: Death on a Staircase on SBS OnDemand right now, with the huuuugge final episode airing at 8:30pm on December 4.

2. Bump, Season 5

Do you want the good news or the bad news first? Let’s go with good — Stan’s comedy Bump is back for its fifth season this December. The bad news? It’s the final installment we can expect from the beloved Aussie series.

The fifth season kicks off with another time jump, seeing the Chalmers’ family go through Oly’s (Nathalie Morris) second pregnancy and Angie’s (Claudia Karvan) cancer diagnosis.

I’m a bit bummed this show has to end but what can you do? Soak it up while it lasts, I guess!!!

You can watch all episodes of Bump, seasons one to five, on Stan from Boxing Day, December 26.

3. Dexter: Original Sin

Well, would you look at that? Everyone’s favourite serial killer is back. This time around, he’s a hell of a lot younger.

Dexter: Orignial Sin is a prequel to the much-loved OG series. It stars Patrick Gibson as young Dexter, who is a student in the midst of a forensic internship with the police department. When he begins to get homicidal urges, it’s his father (Christian Slater) who teaches him about the Code, inspiring to only see through his blood-thirsty urges by killing people who deserve to die.

I know, I know, sequels are a dangerous game but this one even has the original Dexter, Michael C. Hall returning for some flash forwards and the voice over.

You can watch Dexter: Original Sin on Paramount+ from Friday, December 13 — spooky!!!!

4. The Sticky

If there’s two things I love in this world, it’s maple syrup and any content about a cheeky little heist. The Sticky has both.

Produced by Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis, the series stars Margo Martindale as a tough maple syrup farmer who turns to some desperate action when authorities attempt to take away her entire livlihood. She teams up with a mobster named Mike (Chris Diamantopoulos), and a security guard Remy (Guillaume Cyr) to carry out the elaborate heist.

The series is very loosely based on the Great Canadian Maple Syrup Heist of 2011, where 3,000 tonnes of maple syrup worth $18 million USD ($27.6 million AUD) was stolen from a storage facility in Quebec over several months. Do you reckon the robbers said please and thank you whilst they were pulling off their sneaky little antics? I think so.

You can watch The Sticky on Prime Video from December 6.

5. Good Girls Revolt

Good Girls Revolt is a series set in the 1960s and based on real events documented in Lynn Povich‘s non-fiction book The Good Girls Revolt.

The series follows a young reporter named Patti Robinson (Genevieve Angelson) and her female colleagues at the News of the Week Magazine, who decide to push back against the newsroom’s norms and demand equal treatment and respect as reporters.

Their bold, yet extremely fair, request has a ripple effect throughout their lives and empowers them to use the same ballsy spirit within their friendships and love lives along with their careers.

You can watch Season One of Good Girls Revolt on PEDESTRIAN TELEVISION now.

6. Squid Game

Squid Game, one of Netflix’s most bone-chilling, enthralling and straight up gory series is back for another intriguingsecond season. This time around, Seong Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) going back into the game — like an absolute mad man — three years after the events of season one.

This time around, he is determined to seek revenge and justice against the organisers and stop the game for good. I just know i’ll be watching this seaosn through my fingers.

For a full run-down on everything we know about the new series, you can check out our breakdown HERE.

You can watch season two of Squid Game on Netflix from December 26.

7. Laid

You know when you’re actively dating and feel like everything is wrong with you? Let me tell you that in most cases, you’re not the problem. However, in BINGE’s new romantic comedy series, Laid, the main character Ruby (Stephanie Hsu) really is in the problem. You see, Ruby has realised that every one of her former sexual partners has dropped dead in very strange ways.

Now, she must go confront the demons and former lovers of her past to find out why on earth these macabre events are happening.

If this plot sounds super familiar, that’s because this iteration was based on the 2011 Australian show of the same name.

You can watch season one of Laid on BINGE from December 19.

8. Paris & Nicole: The Encore

Two decades after Paris Hilton and Nicole Richie became household names from their reality show The Simple Life, the dynamic duo are back. This time, they’re putting on a show with an unexpected twist — a one-time special operatic performance based on a phrase they made up 18 years ago, “Sanasa”.

Along the way, they’ll also update audiences on what’s been going on in their lives over the last 20 years. I couldn’t make this shit up if I fkn tried.

You can stream Paris & Nicole: The Encore on Hayu from December 13.

There you have it! If these shows aren’t enough for you, why not check out some of my previous month’s recommendations.
