8 Key Comics You Have to Buy Now Before Spider-Man: Brand New Day

Something interesting happened after 2024’s Deadpool and Wolverine; multiple comics that inspired the scenes would spike in value during a speculation rush. In 2023, after James Gunn’s DCU announcement, Batman #655 from 2006, the first appearance of Damian Wayne, sold for $500 in an after-announcement speculation rush. Comics that inspire the MCU had a temporary spike in value, even though many of those films won’t happen now. I say this because there are many key comics you have to buy now before Spider-Man: Brand New Day drops.

Here are eight such key comics you should consider investing in now.

1. The Amazing Spider-Man #129 (1974) Marvel

Is Amazing Spider-Man one of the key comics you have to buy now before Spider-Man: Brand New Day premieres? I would recommend that you buy Amazing Spider-Man #129 even if the film is not close to dropping. This issue features the first appearance of the Punisher.

It’s weird to consider that the Punisher, a serial killer of killers, and the family-friendly Spider-Man have always had this direct connection.

A 9.8 CGC grade of this historic comic is worth almost $16,000. You could also get a 9.2 CGC grade for about $3,100. Watch the price of this comic as the film opens and the Punisher: One Last Kill Disney+ special drops.

2. Web of Spider-Man #36 (1988) Marvel

Actor and rapper Marvin Jones III will portray New York City gangster Tombstone for the first time in live-action. Tombstone is an albino Black man who speaks in ominous and menacing whispers. He files his teeth to give them a pointy and razor-sharp aesthetic. In the comics, Tombstone has super strength and reflexes.

A 9.8 CGC grade of this comic is worth $285 on the collectibles market

3. Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #1 (2005) Marvel

One of the most compelling scenes from the recent trailer was seeing Peter Parker emerge from a cocoon. Peter’s eyes also change to dark colors in another scene. Many online fans are speculating that the film will borrow elements from the 2005 story, “The Other.”

This controversial story would revise the Spider-Man origin so that Peter was chosen to become a hero due to a mystical spider-totem lineage, not a random spider bite. During the story, Peter is wrapped in a spider web cocoon after a near death experience. After emerging from the cocoon, Peter gains night vision, organic webbing, stingers on his wrists, and a greatly enhanced spider-sense.

Is this definitely one of the key comics you have to buy now? It is a gamble, but I think it is a good one to make. A 9.8 CGC grade of this comic is worth $45

Spider-Man: The Other is a 288-page paperback. It collects the entire storyline. Buy it now from Amazon for $18.63.

4. Marvel Fanfare #2 (1982) Marvel

Man-Spider is the creature Spider-Man becomes after undergoing an experiment that mutates his powers in horrific ways. Man-Spider is a monstrous spider and human hybrid that aesthetically looks like a spider with multiple arms and a human form. In the comics, Spider-Man and Angel from the X-Men are captured by Brainchild, who forces them to become guinea pigs in genetic experiments.

People on social media believe that Peter might mutate into Man-Spider in Brand New Day. Man-Spider also has a cult following after appearing in the 1990s Spider-Man cartoon. A 9.8 CGC grade of this comic is worth $66 and would be a bargain to get now.

5. The Amazing Spider-Man #18 (1964)

In the MCU, Ned Leeds is portrayed by Jacob Batalon, an actor of Filipino-American descent. However, Ned Leeds is a white male in the comic books. Leeds made his debut in issue #18 as a nameless Daily Bugle employee; he was named as “Ned Leeds” in issue #19. Additionally, Leeds was married to Betty Brant and was a colleague of Peter’s, not his best friend.

Leeds would become the Hobgoblin, a Green Goblin analogue villain, decades later. A 9.8 CGC grade of this issue is worth almost $13,700. A 9.2 CGC is worth over $2,600.

6. The X-Men #1 (1963) Marvel

This comic is definitely one of those key comics you have to buy if you are a serious collector or collectibles investor. Fan hype is at an all-time high now that fans are almost 100% sure that actress Sadie Sink will play Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Her introduction in this film could also be a soft introduction for the “Mutant Saga” phase of MCU films to come later.

Jean Grey made her debut in The X-Men #1 in 1963. This is a rare comic, so even if you can find a 4.0 CGC, it could be worth $7,000. A 9.8 CGC grade of this historic comic is worth over $486,000 on the collectors market.

A 9.6 CGC copy in a slab sold for $871,999 in 2022 at auction.

7. Amazing Spider-Man #19 (1964) Marvel

Scorpion is a fan-favorite character to comic book fans who is now getting his shine in the MCU films. Mac Gargan was a private investigator hired by J. Jonah Jameson to investigate Spider-Man. Gargan would later undergo experimentation to become the super-villain Scorpion.

Actor Michael Mando made his debut as Mac Gargan in 2017’s Spider-Man: Homecoming. Mando will make his official debut as Scorpion in the costume in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. This is definitely one of those key comics you have to buy as a collector.

A 9.8 CGC grade of this comic is worth over $10,500.

8. Daredevil #174 (1981) Marvel

The Hand is an ancient and mythical ninja order who operate as mercenaries, assassins, and gangsters. The Hand is based in Japan and was founded in 1588. Members of the Hand practice an occult magic that can resurrect someone they kill as a member of their group.

The Hand are primarily Daredevil villains and made their live-action debut on the Netflix-era Daredevil, The Defenders, and Iron Fist shows. The Hand will make their live-action MCU debut in Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

A 9.8 CGC grade of this comic has a collectibles market value of almost $200
