‘75 swimming pools’ worth of wasted medicine thrown away in England every year

Pharmacies claim the amount of wasted medicines thrown away in England in just one year could fill 75 swimming pools.

The public has been told not to “over-order” medicine and instead only order a repeat prescription when it is needed after an estimated 3,400 tonnes worth of partially used medicines were disposed of in England in 2024/25, according to the National Pharmacy Association (NPA).
