Lohri, the colorful festival that the Hindu and Sikh communities in Haryana and Punjab celebrate with great enthusiasm, is rapidly approaching. It is a festival that is embraced with joy and fervor. This auspicious event, also called Lohadi or Lal Loi, is to be celebrated on the 14th of January, 2024 and it marks the end of winter and the beginning of longer days of sunlight. It falls before Makar Sankranti. The heart of Lohri celebrations lies in the tradition of lighting a bonfire, symbolizing the triumph of good over evil, prosperity, and the harvesting of crops.
The smell of roasting peanuts and laughter fill the air as families congregate around the bonfire. The sounds of traditional folk songs are danced to by the flames, creating a spirit of harmony and positivity. Sesame seeds, jaggery, gajak, rewdi, and peanuts are among the offerings made to the fire. Parikrama is also performed by the participants, lending a holy air to the celebrations.
