Millions of Social Security recipients face unexpected demands to repay thousands of dollars because of benefit overpayments, sometimes through no fault of their own. One woman in her 70s recently found herself facing a $35,000 bill from the Social Security Administration (SSA), according to CBS News.
The woman received the notice earlier this year. Around the same time, her monthly Social Security payment dropped by about $600 to roughly $2,700 after taxes. The SSA said the reduction was made to "correct [her] benefit amount," but did not initially provide a detailed explanation.
