Maura Twomey, a 70-year-old former primary school teacher who lives in Boston, crossed California's Catalina Channel on 17 August in an unofficial time of 15 hours, 45 minutes and 23 seconds, pending ratification. She became the oldest person to complete the crossing and earned the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming. She swam in honour of her youngest brother, Martin, who received a kidney from a deceased donor in June after two and a half years on dialysis. Her fundraising page shows €17,022 raised online for the IKA against a target of €15,000.
