70 new social houses approved on old school site in Strabane

A new social housing development in Strabane with 60 houses and 10 apartments has been granted full planning approval.

Members of the planning committee of Derry City and Strabane District Council approved the plans on the site of the former Our Lady of Mercy High School in the Co Tyrone town.

The development will be located on the 2.57 hectare of land associated with the former school, located north of Evish Road and east of Mount Carmel Heights.

The buildings associated with the former school have now been demolished and the site cleared for development.

The plans for the new development were first proposed in July last year, with the application being lodged by McGettigan Homes and Clanmil Developments.

Planning committee chair Kieran McGuire welcomed the approval, saying there was an ‘urgent need’ for new housing in Strabane.

“I am pleased to see this application progress through the planning system,” Cllr McGuire said.

“There is an urgent need for quality new housing for families in Strabane and the surrounding area to meet growing demand.

“I am delighted to see developers continuing to invest in the area, and recognising that Strabane is a fantastic place to locate.”

Committee member Jason Barr said the new development will help to alleviate housing pressure in the area.

“This will go in some way to help alleviate the housing problem and housing demand within the town,” Cllr Barr said.

“Well done to McGettigan and Clanmill housing for seeing this through and we look forward to seeing this coming to life and seeing families benefit from this.”
