A dog can ignore a perfectly reasonable instruction, steal a sandwich, and then look genuinely surprised when the human holding the sandwich starts talking. Unfortunately, many familiar scolding phrases do little to explain what went wrong. Some can even make training more confusing.
The problem usually isn’t a lack of love or effort. Dog owners often use language that makes perfect sense to another person but gives a dog very little useful information. Dogs learn through associations, timing, consequences, and repetition, not through a detailed explanation of household rules. A better approach replaces vague reprimands with clear cues and rewards for the behavior you actually want.
