7 Southern Towns Where Rent Is Under $1,000

There’s little doubt that many Americans are feeling the pinch when it comes to the current cost of living.

Grocery prices continue to present a problem for household budgets, and when it comes to rent, the average nationwide rent comes in at around $1,750 per month, per RentCafe.

If that figure doesn’t sound affordable to you, you may not be alone. However, certain towns, particularly in the South, are beating the national average by a significant margin. What follows is a profile of some communities falling within this housing affordability threshold, according to data points.

McAllen, Texas

With Zillow indicating that McAllen, Texas, plays host to a rental landscape which sees approximately 50% of its rentals priced at $1,000 or below, it may make sense for those looking for a bargain-priced apartment to consider the Lone Star state home.

The local tourism website notes that visitors (and residents) can enjoy the McAllen Heritage Museum, the scenic Quinta Mazatlan estate — complete with lush gardens — and a vibrant arts scene.

Little Rock, Arkansas

Coming in just below McAllen on the low-priced rental cost roster when considering the Southern states, Little Rock, Arkansas, currently lists 49% of its rental apartments at a cost of $1,000 or less monthly.

As Southern Living outlined, Little Rock has a lot to see and do: Take in the bustling River Market District for a meal and beverage, or for shopping and museum experiences; enjoy a pastoral picnic at the Old Mill, featured in 1939’s classic “Gone With the Wind”; or get some exercise — and picturesque views — during a trek across the Big Dam Bridge, “the longest pedestrian and cycling bridge in North America.”

Florence, Alabama

Those seeking life in a smaller community with lower-than-usual rent prices could do well to think about pulling up stakes and moving to Florence, Alabama.

Rent comes in at a median of $895 for a one-bedroom apartment, according to Zumper, and this charming community features a lively music scene — take in a show at The Shoals — or enjoy one of many prominent arts and culture hubs, from the Kennedy-Douglass Center for the Arts to the Florence Mound Museum. The Blackberry Trail Golf Course is also an option for those looking to perfect their swing, and campgrounds are available nearby for lovers of the great outdoors.
