Philadelphia will kick off their first training camp practice in a little over five weeks, and they’ll have one of the NFL’s more versatile rosters in 2024.
The Eagles have hybrid athletes all over the field, with guys who can block, catch, and run, while combining all of those dominant attributes.
On defense, Vic Fangio has multiple defenders at all three levels that offer versatility and the ability to play in different spots.
With training camp fast approaching, here are Philadelphia’s seven most versatile players.
DT Milton Williams
Williams offers a combination of athleticism, strength, and effort; he can disrupt offenses on any snap. Williams can flourish in multiple positions.
TE Dallas Goedert
Goedert has a unique skill set that makes him one of the top two or three all-around tight ends in football.
An outstanding blocker in the run game, Goedert also can be dynamic in the passing game. Even with missing five games in 2022, Goedert still finished third in the NFL with 27 explosive pass plays (15-plus yards) during the regular season.
RB Saquon Barkley
Barkley played six seasons with the Eagles’ NFC East rival. In 74 career games with New York, the 27-year-old rushed 1,201 times for 5,211 yards and 35 touchdowns. Barkley was also a weapon in the passing game, tallying 288 receptions for 2,100 yards and 12 touchdowns.
He’ll now give Jalen Hurts and the Eagles a dynamic, three-down running back that should flourish in Kellen Moore’s offensive system.
QB Jalen Hurts
Last season, in 17 regular season games, Hurts completed 65.4 percent of his passes for 3,858 yards and a career-high 23 touchdowns. He also added 15 rushing touchdowns, setting a new NFL record for most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback in a single season, matching Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.
Hurts also broke multiple franchise records – establishing team records in total yards (4,463) and total touchdowns (38), while finishing second in the league in total scores behind Allen (42).
The versatility comes from his ability to dominate as a runner or thrower.
He joined former Panthers star quarterback Cam Newton as the only quarterback in NFL history with 10+ rushing touchdowns in NFL history.
Hurts accomplished the feat in back-to-back seasons.
CB Avonte Maddox
Maddox, has gotten first-team work in the slot and second-team action at safety, and he’s been a starter at cornerback, the slot, and safety at times in his seven-year career.
DB Cooper DeJean
After starting his career at Iowa as a safety, DeJean moved to outside corner over the last two seasons and excelled in zone coverages specifically. DeJean will play the Nickel, safety, outside corner, or all of the above, as a Swiss army knife for Vic Fangio.
OL Mekhi Becton
Becton, the 11th overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft out of Louisville, can play offensive tackle, and now after joining the Eagles, offensive guard.
CB Isaiah Rodgers
Rodgers was the 5th best overall cornerback and the NFL’s 6th best cornerback during the 2022 season, according to Pro Football Focus. A phenomenal special teams standout, Rodgers became just the sixth rookie in Colts history to return a kickoff for a touchdown, earning PFWA All-Rookie honors during the 2022 season. Rodgers has averaged 27.0 yards per kickoff return in his career and should flourish under the new rules.
