7 more ‘Plane’ sequels we need to see after ‘Ship’

In January of 2023, audiences were introduced to the world of Captain Brodie Torrance, a former military man-turned-airline pilot (played by Gerard Butler) who rises to the occasion when the passengers of his ill-fated flight need him most. I’m of course discussing the plot of the film Plane, a movie that is about exactly what you think it’s about and grossed $43 million at the box office, nearly doubling its production budget.

Today, we learned that Plane is getting a sequel called Ship. As of publication we have no particulars about the plot of this sequel. There’s simply no way for us to have any idea as to what this film will be about.

While we wait for more details, we think it’s time to begin speculating about the future of this franchise. We have our elevator pitches ready, Hollywood. Here are our suggestions for possible future sequels in the ever-expanding Plane Cinematic Universe.

BUS

(Junfu Han / USA TODAY NETWORK)

Brodie Torrance finds himself trapped in a bus that has in some way had its safety compromised by terrorists. Sounds far-fetched, I know, but I think we can make this work. This has definitely never been done before.

BIKE

A low-budget action flick in the mold of Run, Lola, Run. The entire film is extended chase sequence where both characters are on vintage Huffy street bikes. Maybe a couple of sweet jumps thrown in just to spice things up.

BLIMP

A prequel set during the 1930s. We discover that Brodie Torrance’s grandfather (also played by Butler) was a spy for British intelligence and snuck his way onto a Nazi airship. Big-budget hijinks ensue, bad guys are thrown off the side. The budget for explosions will be exceeded only by the budget for using the Wilhelm Scream sound effect.

TROLLEY

Brodie Torrance is faced with the ultimate dilemma as an out of control trolley barrels toward a group of hostages tied up by terrorists. I don’t want to spoil the twist but you will never guess what’s on the other track. Tagline: “Solve The Problem, Save Everyone”

MOPED

(Matthew Dae Smith/Lansing State Journal / USA TODAY NETWORK)

This title works on multiple levels, as it refers to both the downtrodden nature of our depressed protagonist and the vehicle with which he tries and fails to outrun his problems. I don’t know, we might be getting a little too intellectual for this franchise now that I think about it…

GONDOLA

The Plane franchise goes to Italy where Brodie Torrance grows a big mustache and chases bad guys using a classic Venetian gondola. At one point a thick fog rolls in and he must use echolocation to locate the villains by singing Italian opera music. It’s OK, I’m allowed to make this joke, I’m Italian, check the byline.

An aging Brodie Torrance finally gives up his life of danger and adventure and spends two hours really thinking about his life while stuck in traffic. Sure, he’s managed to avoid death in all these movies, but has he also been avoiding life? Really makes you think…
