The UK has seen its fair share of rain over the past few months. While dogs, kids and Peppa Pig tend to love muddy puddles they can be the bane of the trainer-wearer on long country walks, which is where the best women’s wellies can be a life saver.
Wellies come in a variety of designs – there are short styles, medium heights for long walks or tall heights to keep you dry right up to your knees (ideal for riverside or waterfall walks). The best wellies have thick soles to provide grip and durability, and should be easy enough to slip on and off. While some come with a soft lining, others are less insulating, so separate welly socks are a must to keep your feet warm in winter.
With unpredictable spring weather in mind, I’ve donned wellington boots in all colours, shapes and sizes and rigorously tested them for hours in the wind and rain, on beaches and in the mud, so you don’t have to.
Whether your decision-making process for purchasing wellies goes on warmth, style, colour or price, I’ve found pairs to suit all welly-wearers.

Caldene westfield II wellington

Best: women's wellies overall
Size range: UK 3-12
Material: Natural rubber
Colours: Brown, green, blue, black
Why we love it
- Very comfortable
- Easy to slide on and off
- Breathable
- Excellent grip
Take note
- Thick socks recommended on a long walk to keep feet warm
The Caldene westfield II wellington boots are a robust and practical choice for any type of weather, and the best wellies for women I tested. Designed with a classic country look in rich brown, these good-looking boots combine functional performance with everyday comfort. They’re fully waterproof and built from natural rubber, with a neoprene lining that keeps feet warm in cold conditions while still being breathable enough for long wear. They kept me the perfect temperature on a long walk through a wood to a pub.
The fit is broadly unisex and true-to-size, though if you have narrow feet, sizing down will give a cosier fit (or you opt for thicker socks). The adjustable mechanism at the calf allows a degree of customisation for wider legs, so the fit can really be tailored.
The sturdy sole and good tread meant they held up well on muddy and uneven terrain – there were no slips or trips – and the heel section is supportive on unstable ground, and they feel comfy even after hours of wear. The Caldene bridges the gap between budget and premium brands, so l if you want classic, comfortable, waterproof wellies with thermal lining and good grip, these are a great pick.

Dream Pairs wellington boots

Best: budget women's wellies
Size range: UK 4.5-9
Material: PVC
Colourways: Yellow and red
Why we love it
- Pull-on handle makes them easy to take on and off
- The vibrant yellow garnered compliments in testing
Take note
- Not as comfy for long distances as other boots
The Dream Pairs wellington boots are the best budget women’s wellies, perfect for everyday wear. They feature a synthetic upper and rubber sole, giving basic waterproofing and grip that’s suitable for light rain and city streets, rather than hardcore outdoor terrain. They were tested on a long dog walk on a coast path, and fared absolutely fine after 90 minutes of testing.

They fit comfortably but the sizing tends to run a little small, so if you’ll be wearing these with thick socks, it could be worth sizing up.
These are a great value for money pair of wellies, especially if you’re after something to team with casual outfits for everyday use, errands, or commuting. However, they don’t offer as much support or feel as durable as wellies from other established outdoor brands that I tested.

Le Chameau women's National Trust vierzon Jersey lined wellington

Best: women's wellies for countryside walks
Size range: UK 3-8
Material: Chamolux rubber
Colourways: Oak green
Why we love it
- Jersey lining is good for temperature regulating
- Grippy sole
- Removable insole makes them easy to clean
Take note
- Pricey
The National Trust collaboration version of Le Chameau’s classic vierzon wellingtons takes everything great about the original and wraps it in a stylish, heritage-inspired package. Made from the brand’s signature supple Chamolux rubber, these boots feel significantly more comfortable and flexible than many standard rubber wellies right out of the box.
The standout feature of these wellies is the thoughtfully designed jersey lining, made from breathable organic cotton and recycled polyester. These materials helped to wick moisture and enhanced comfort for all-day wear.
A portion of each purchase supports the National Trust’s work protecting the UK’s landscapes and heritage sites. In fact as part of my testing, I wore them on a stomp around a National Trust grounds. Practical features like the adjustable waterproof gusset and dual-density grip sole meant they performed well across muddy fields and uneven terrain, giving confident traction even on wet grass.
The removable insole is a nice touch too, making drying and cleaning easier after heavy use. If you’re after a premium, technically capable welly boot with a comfortable interior and a bit of countryside charm, these are a great option to invest in.

Lunar rubber spot wellington boot

Best: women's wellies for gardening
Size range: UK 3-8
Material: Rubber
Colourways: Blue spotted
Why we love it
- Affordable
- Keeps feet dry
- Decent grip
Take note
- Not the most comfortable for long walks
The Lunar rubber spot wellington boots offer a fun and functional take on classic wet-weather footwear, blending practical performance with a quirky spotted design. They’re the best women’s wellies I tested for gardening as the rubber feels lightweight, but they don’t have as much support as other brands I tested.
Made from fully waterproof rubber, these boots kept my feet dry when navigating puddles, muddy paths and soggy gardens. The deep cleated sole provides decent grip underfoot, helping maintain traction on wet surfaces like grass or slippery pavements. An adjustable calf strap is a thoughtful addition and lets you fine-tune the fit, so the boots feel more secure around your lower leg. The padded insole adds a surprising amount of comfort for extended wear, too.
These aren’t heavy-duty hiking or country walking boots as the heel are started to feel uncomfortable after a good few miles of testing. Ankle support is minimal compared with higher-end models too, but this is only noticeable on uneven terrain.
The sizing and fit can vary by foot shape, so make sure you know your returns policy before ordering.

Best: women's wellies for everyday wear
Size range: EU 36-45
Materials: Natural rubber
Colourways: Sherbert orange, dusty lilac, poppy red, clay, rust, sand, seafoam, grape
Why we love it
- The style and sole contrast make them look and feel more like a Chelsea boot than a wellie
Take note

The Merry People ankle bobbi wellies are a standout choice if you’re after stylish everyday, waterproof boots that feel a bit more elevated than classic wellies. They take the familiar rubber boot silhouette and reimagine it as a versatile ankle boot that works just as well on rainy streets as in muddy fields. They’re the best-looking on the list and garnered plenty of compliments during testing, too.

One of the most consistently praised aspects of these boots is comfort and they’ve become a wardrobe staple since testing. They’re built from quality natural rubber with a neoprene lining that provides warmth and a snug feel; perfect for wet and chilly weather. They also have built-in arch support and a traction sole, giving more support than many basic rubber boots. The waterproof construction means your feet stay dry through rain showers, puddles and damp ground, while the removable insole adds convenience. They kept my feet dry and warm while standing on a football sidelines and while going for a long dog walk.
They’re easy slip on and off with ease to pull tabs, and the rust colour makes them easy to pair with everything.
These boots are a stylish, comfortable and reliable choice for everyday wet-weather wear, ideal if you want more flair and comfort than traditional wellies.

The soft neoprene lining adds warmth and cushioning, with built-in arch support and removable insoles to help with comfort.
