6 surprising Celtic and Rangers Champions League stats as Moritz Jenz crashes passing party

Celtic and Rangers' Champions League campaigns have both begun rather slowly - although stats suggest that one of the two sides are set to end up in the ascendency.

Rangers have conceded seven and failed to score themselves as they remain rooted to the bottom of an admittedly tough Group A that involves Liverpool, Napoli and Ajax, whilst Celtic fell to an impressive Real Madrid side before failing to take the bull by the horns against a depleted Shakhtar Donetsk outfit.

A lot is taken into consideration with statistics nowadays, and it is no surprise that the better teams in the competition rank top of the rankings throughout. But there are a few surprises from the Scottish outfits that could mark the rise of their progression in the tournament. Record Sport takes a look at some of the statistics that heavily favour - or go against - Celtic and Rangers ' so far this season.

Jenz crashes passing party

Rodri, Antonio Rudiger, Marco Verratti, Fikayo Tomori...that right there is a list of superb passers in defence and midfield.

But, surprisingly, all of them are surpassed by Moritz Jenz in terms of passing completion. The German defender has completed 158 of his 164 attempted passes, giving him a 96 per cent completion rate in the competition.

Jinking Jota gives defences jitters

Jota was close to scoring twice against Shakhtar Donetsk following a couple of jinking runs which had defenders scrambling to find their feet, and although his efforts were not rewarded, the signs are there.

Only La Liga Ousmane Dembele and Vinicius Jr have completed more dribbles than the Portugal starlet, and Celtic will be hoping that their home ties against Leipzig and Shakhtar will prove more fruitful for the former Benfica prodigy.

Callum McGregor, the Duracell Bunny

Talk about a captain's input. McGregor works tirelessly for his teammates, rarely misses a game - and that is evidenced by the kilometres he has conjured up in the centre of the park.

Only Bayern's international star Joshua Kimmich has covered more ground than the Scotland star, which has been pivotal to Celtic's pressing game that they portray under Ange Postecoglou.

James Sands' discipline woes

Sands' red card against Napoli on Wednesday evening may have been a tad controversial to fans of the Light Blues, although he is on an extremely exclusive list of just four players who have been sent off so far in the competition.

The American star joins Chancel Mbemba, Pavel Bucha and Mehdi Taremi on a short list of stars who have received their marching orders, but that is not his only hinderance.

He has committed five fouls so far this campaign, ranking him joint third in the rankings in that regard. Perhaps a problem for Gio van Bronckhorst.

Poor Rangers passing stats highlight clear problem

Whilst Jenz has surprised many at the top of the list, two of Rangers' top stars are at the wrong end of the distribution table - a statistic that perhaps shows why they remain pointless.

Allan McGregor is third bottom of the list, with just 20 of his 36 passes reaching the target; whilst European hero James Tavernier has completed just 23 of his 40 passes.

Of course, long balls and crosses are a major reason for this - but possession retention could go a long way in allowing Rangers to control parts of the game and ultimately take the game to their opponents.

Bassey shows Rangers what they've been missing

Rangers' defensive mishaps have been evident in their opening two games. Concentration lapses galore in the first half found them severely lacking at half-time where they were 3-0 down at Ajax, and tiredness coupled with a lack of composure saw them fall to Napoli in midweek.

Calvin Bassey's departure to Ajax could have a huge say in that. The Nigerian has both attempted and completed the most passes out of anybody in the competition up to press.

And with Sands lacking in the defensive area, whilst Ben Davies has failed to play, it seems as though Bassey's departure has hurt Rangers more than they let on.
