6 single player games to play this Valentine’s Day (to take your mind off it)

Love is in the air this Valentine’s Day, which might just mean all your friends are busy this weekend. If solo queuing isn’t an option, then take a look at this list of single-player games to try out. Some are tried and true classics, while others are new titles that just hit the gaming market to critical acclaim.

Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be about heart-shaped boxes of chocolates or roses, it can be about creating a cult, cultivating a quaint farm, or ripping through parasite-infested monsters.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33

  • Release Date: Apr. 24, 2025
  • Developer: Sandfall Interactive

The only gamers in the world that haven’t heard of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 have most likely been living under a rock all throughout 2025. Made by French studio Sandfall Interactive, Clair Obscur won a record-breaking number of awards at The Game Awards, including Game of the Year, Best Narrative, and Best Game Direction.

Clair Obscur follows the members of Expedition 33 on their quest to kill the Paintress, a mysterious entity that, year by year, paints death based on age. The game is a turn-based RPG, with the environment inspired by Belle Époque France, which makes for a captivating experience from art and story to combat and gameplay.

Cult of the Lamb

  • Release Date: Aug. 11, 2022
  • Developer: Massive Monster

Love doesn’t need to be limited to one person this Valentine’s Day, as Cult of the Lamb allows players to love all their followers equally (or engage in some wholesome polygamy).

Cult of the Lamb is an indie darling game, released by Massive Monster in 2022. The basic premise of the game, which is part dungeon-crawling roguelike and part base management, puts players in charge of their very own cult.

Indoctrinate new followers, give sermons on your teachings, slay heretics in the woods, and grow in power every step of the way. The indie title balances a cute art-style and animations with unsettling actions like sacrificing followers for power.

Mewgenics

  • Release Date: Feb. 10, 2026
  • Developer: Edmund McMillen and Typer Glaiel

From the creators of The Binding of Issac comes Mewgenics, a cat-based tactical roguelike with a particularly unique focus on cats. Sending cats into battle, giving cats upgrades, and breeding cats are all major parts of the game, which means players should get used to mowing through their feline friends fast.

This title just came out and may already be one of the best games of 2026 based on the overwhelming praise from critics and players. For any players looking for a way to lose an entire day (or weekend) to a game, Mewgenics may just be the one stop solution.

Reanimal

  • Release Date: Feb. 13, 2026
  • Developer: Tarsier Studios

Releasing just before Valentine’s Day on Feb. 13 is Tarsier Studios (Little Nightmares I & II) latest game. Reanimal is a co-op psychological horror game, in which a brother and sister must traverse their childhood home after it’s been twisted into a nightmare full of monsters.

Reanimal has a similar style in both gameplay and art direction as Tarsier Studios’ previous titles, which promises dark themes and plenty of environmental puzzles to tease out. While the game is built around the co-op experience, players can also utilize an AI companion to fill in the player two slot.

Stardew Valley

  • Release Date: Feb. 26, 2016
  • Developer: ConcernedApe

Any list of video games centered around sinking time into one title would be incomplete without Stardew Valley. The title that founded the modern genre of cozy games, Stardew Valley takes players to an idyllic town, where they take charge of an overgrown farm and start to build relationships with their neighbors.

There’s a reason Stardew Valley is still so popular more than a decade after its release, partially due to the dedication of its creator, ConcernedApe. Regular updates, like 1.6, have added new content like farms, plants, and romanceable characters over the years.

Resident Evil 4: Remake

Action, horror, quips, and more. (Image via Capcom).
  • Release Date: Mar. 23, 2023
  • Developer: Capcom

If horror is more what someone is looking for this Valentine’s Day, then Resident Evil 4: Remake is the perfect game. A ground up remake of 2005 classic, Resident Evil 4 is an encapsulation of everything great in modern Resident Evil games. The game has the perfect mixture of action, survival horror, and a campy story that revolves around rescuing the President’s daughter from a remote, parasite-infected village.

What makes RE4 even better to play right now is that the release of Resident Evil 9: Requiem is right around the corner, with Leon S. Kennedy returning as a dual protagonist. To fully catch up on the long-running Resident Evil story, RE4 is required material.
