Offer a trade-off, not a refusal
When your boss drops a new task on an already full plate, the instinct is to say yes and quietly drown. The better move is to surface the cost. "I can take that on, which of these three should I pause to make room?" This puts the decision back where it belongs: with the person who assigned both tasks. You haven't refused anything. You've made the constraint visible and asked for a priority call. In most workplaces, managers genuinely don't track every live task their team is carrying. Naming the trade-off isn't insubordination; it's information they needed anyway.
