5 ways to prevent and remove black mould as summer heat makes it perfect breeding ground

Black mould is a problem found in many homes, seemingly covering bathrooms, walls and window sills. But not only is the problem unsightly but it can also post a serious health risk.

And in the summer it can seem to be an even bigger problem than at some other times. This is because warm weather can be a perfect breeding ground for it.

According to antibacterial specialists United Silicones, mould is most common in warm rooms filled with moisture like the bathroom. And they say the issue becomes increasingly prevalent during the summer and in heatwaves when humidity is at its highest.

Experts in antibacterial solutions from the firm have explained how to prevent and remove mould from your bathroom to avoid health issues such as respiratory disease, especially as the summer heat continues to make damp areas a breeding ground for mould growth. This is what they say.

“Why is Mould Common in Bathrooms During The Summer?

Mould thrives in damp and warm spaces, which is why it is often found in bathrooms. However, during the summer, the additional humidity and heat make the bathroom the perfect breeding ground for mould and mildew as dry, fresh air is difficult to achieve in that environment. Heat waves make the bathroom an even better place for mould to grow as the humidity hits its peak, with minimal fresh air.

How Can Mould Growth Affect Your Health?

  • Causes allergic reactions like sneezing, coughing, watery eyes, and skin irritation
  • Prolonged exposure leads to respiratory problems
  • Sinus infections
  • Asthma attacks
  • Fungal infections, which can affect the skin, lungs, or other organs

5 Ways to Prevent and Remove Mould in Your Bathroom

1 - Open The Windows and Door After A Shower

The steam and moisture created while washing yourself can settle on surfaces, allowing for mould to settle and grow. Opening the bathroom door and any windows in the room allows fresh air to circulate and properly ventilate the area, reducing excess humidity. This minimises the amount of moisture present in the bathroom that would otherwise allow mould to develop.

2 - Use a Dehumidifier

Dehumidifiers extract excess moisture from the air, reducing the humidity in the bathroom, and creating a dry, mould-free environment. By placing a dehumidifier near the bathtub or shower, where mould buildup occurs the most as it is the dampest area in the bathroom, you can regulate and reduce mould growth.

3 - Avoid Using Carpets and Rugs

It is best to avoid using a rug in the bathroom as the fabric makes it easy to trap moisture, especially in a frequently damp environment with high humidity and is a breeding ground for mould growth. Instead, simply stand on tiled or vinyl flooring while drying yourself, as this material is moisture-resistant. This helps to limit moisture retention in the bathroom, keeping it dry.

4 - Install EziSil Strips in Your Bath and Shower

EziSil strips are specifically designed to create a waterproof barrier between the shower or bathtub and surrounding tiles or walls. They are a proactive tool for preventing mould growth as they effectively seal gaps and joints in the bath or shower tray, preventing water from leaking into crevices where mould can develop. As a durable and mould-resistant preventative, EziSil strips can provide long-lasting protection against moisture buildup and mould growth.

5 - Regularly Clean The Bathroom Using a White Vinegar Solution

It is recommended that you clean your bathroom at least once a week with a solution of water and white vinegar for the best results. White vinegar is a natural cleaning agent that has antimicrobial properties that make it effective at removing mould. The acidic nature of the solution helps to break down mould spores on various bathroom surfaces and appliances, preventing regrowth.”
