5 things we noticed as Donny van de Beek returns to Man Utd training and new faces introduced

Manchester United's hopes of returning to the Champions League hang in the balance after a tricky period for Erik ten Hag's team.

The Red Devils are fourth in the Premier League table, one point ahead of Liverpool in fifth with a game in hand. The Carabao Cup winners need to win two of their last three league fixtures against Bournemouth, Chelsea and Fulham to confirm a top-four finish.

Next up for United is a trip to Dean Court to face the Cherries, with kick-off at 3pm on Saturday. Ten Hag's side trained at Carrington on Thursday in preparation for that huge clash... and here are five things we noticed from that important session.

1. Donny's back

Ten Hag received a welcomed boost on Thursday, as Donny van de Beek was spotted sprinting around Carrington. The Dutchman thought his season was over after he picked up a knee injury against Bournemouth, but he might make a surprise return.

Van de Beek is unlikely to play in any of United's final three Premier League fixtures, although he does still have two weeks to prove his fitness ahead of the FA Cup final. Even if the midfielder doesn't make it, it's good to see him back on the grass.

2. Scott says hello

Do you think Manchester United will finish in the Premier League's top four? Let us know in the comments below!

Speaking of midfielders, Scott McTominay is back in first-team training after missing six Premier League games with an undisclosed injury. He will fill the void left by Marcel Sabitzer, who was recently ruled out for the rest of the season with a knee injury.

United have confirmed Ten Hag will be available for the Bournemouth game, despite only just returning to fitness. Ten Hag will speak to the press on Friday to provide more information. "He [McTominay] is making really good steps," said Ten Hag last weekend.

3. Youngster's chance

With Sabitzer unavailable, Ten Hag appears to have promoted promising youngster Daniel Gore to the first-team squad. The 18-year-old midfielder has not made Ten Hag's bench this season but has impressed in the Premier League 2, EFL Trophy and FA Youth Cup.

United's website describes Gore as a "tenacious and skilled attacking midfielder". That tenacity was on show earlier in the campaign when he was involved in a heated bust-up with Anthony Martial, with that episode now confined to the history books.

4. Rashford's return

Another player back in training is Marcus Rashford, who is the frontrunner to win United's Player of the Season award. The England international missed their recent 2-0 win against Wolves through injury but trained with the first-team squad on Thursday.

Ten Hag will be delighted to have Rashford available again. The 25-year-old has been in sensational form this season, scoring 29 club goals in all competitions. Rashford was nominated for the Premier League's Player of the Season prize on Thursday.

5. All smiles... for now

Ten Hag looked relaxed in training, but he knows how big United's remaining three Premier League games are. Speaking ahead of the Wolves game, he urged his team to have the "courage" to get the job done and not allow Liverpool to usurp them.

Ten Hag said: "Top football it is always a test. We can take confidence and belief because we have proven we’ve beaten the best teams in the world [United have beaten the likes Man City, Barcelona and Liverpool this season].

"But yes, it’s a test of courage if we can do it because we are in the right position and we have to finish it. It’s a high demand, so it needs high standards so definitely needs courage. The players and I need to take responsibility for it."

Ten Hag added: "We have everything in our hands. We Have to bring our performance."

All eyes will be on Dean Court come Saturday.
