The hometown kid stays home! The Detroit native, Michigan alum edge Aidan Hutchinson has been selected as the 2nd overall pick by the Detroit Lions. After the Jaguars selected Travon Walker as the 1st pick, it felt like the Lions ran the draft card and couldn’t get it to the commissioner fast enough.
Hutchinson fits the persona of what Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell are trying to build in Detroit. Between his competitive nature, grit, and no-quit attitude, he will fit quite well on the Lions defense. He will be looked at as a cornerstone player and instantly upgrade the defense taking it to the next level.
With the new kid in town, let’s get to know Hutchinson more with a few fun facts.
- Last year, Hutchinson finished the season with 16.5 tackles for loss and 14 sacks earning him the Big 10 defensive player of the year and a consensus All-American.
- Hutchinson finished second in the Heisman trophy right behind Alabama QB Bryce Young with these impressive feats, but he was also a finalist for William V. Campbell Trophy (Academic Heisman).
- He is a Michigan prodigy with his father, Chris, who also played in Michigan and shared the same 97 jersey number. Also, according to his mother, he inherited his father’s mental strength and motor.
- If the Lions need someone to play tight end in a pinch, Hutchinson has some experience back in his high school days when he recorded 38 catches for 419 yards and eight touchdowns. Due to his strong high school career, he earned a bid to the Army All-American game, where he earned four tackles and two sacks.
- If any Lions players need a cornhole partner, don’t look any further than Hutchinson. He self-proclaimed himself as the world’s greatest cornhole player, according to his Instagram.
Welcome to Detroit! Looking forward to taking the next step!
