5 things missed as Cristiano Ronaldo's furious reaction spotted and Man Utd exit Europe

It was the frantic evening at Old Trafford as Atletico Madrid dumped Manchester United out of the Champions League.

A textbook performance from Diego Simeone's men away from home in Europe put the visitors into the quarter-finals as Renan Lodi's goal was the deciding factor in the 1-0 victory. For United, their last chance of winning silverware this season is gone.

It was end-to-end stuff in the first half as Atletico took the lead just before halftime. The Spanish side then sat in after the break as United pushed for an equaliser but they couldn't find a way to get back into the game.

There were almost too many big talking points from the game to keep track of. Here are five moments missed from the Champions League clash.

Oblak back to his best

Jan Oblak had a shaky start to the game, much like his first leg at the Wanda Metropolitana and his season for Atletico Madrid. The keeper looks a shadow of his former self and looks far from the player that has been considered one of the best at his position in the world the past few years.

The Slovenian was hesitant in the early stages and got away with one as he challenged Anthony Elanga for the ball. Somehow the Man United youngster rose above the goalie as Oblak fell to the ground. Atletico were awarded a free-kick but it seemed like the ball was there to be won and a case of the keeper getting too much protection.

Oblak recovered well through with a string of important saves in the first half as Atletico absorbed United's pressure before taking the lead on the counter-attack through Renan Lodi. He continued his brilliant performance in the second half and looked back to being the Jan Oblak we all know.

Fred channels inner Berbatov

Fred was at his brilliant best in the first half and was absolutely everywhere for United, winning the ball and driving the ball forward. He produced an exceptional bit of skill at the byline to deceive the Atletico defender.

It was Dimitar Berbatov-esk and it brought out a Gary Neville-like gasp from BT Sport commentator Robbie Savage. Fred is often the fall guy for United when they lose but credit where credit is due, he is one player who showed up for Rangnick's men.

De Paul the antagoniser

Atletico Madrid were doing their best to noise up United and Rodrigo de Paul was the main instigator. The Argentine picked up a yellow card in the first half after a series of fouls, but it was his coming together with Harry Maguire that raised some eyebrows.

The England defender committed a foul from a United corner and as he was walking back up the pitch, De Paul had some words for him in an attempt to get a reaction out of him. Maguire knew exactly what he was playing at and ignored the Atletico Madrid man.

It wouldn't deter De Paul who eventually picked up his booking, but it was job well done by the midfielder as Atletico frustrated United for long spells.

Ronaldo gets the binoculars out

Cristiano Ronaldo was furious with the referee throughout the 90 minutes and the Portugal star had a series of outbursts aimed in his direction. Atletico got physical with the 37-year-old and it seemed to get under his skin.

It all came to a head when Lodi scored the opener as there were claims Anthony Elanga was fouled in the build-up. The ref or VAR didn't see anything wrong with it but Ronaldo thought otherwise.

He was screaming at the ref as Diego Simeone's men reeled away in celebration. And Ronaldo was venting his frustration as play was about to be resumed as he made a binocular gesture to suggest that he missed a clear foul.

Ronaldo clashes into Maguire's head

It was that kind of night where Manchester United players were literally getting in each other's way. United were pushing for an equaliser as they won a free kick in a promising position down the left-hand side.

Bruno Fernandes floated an inviting ball into the back post that his teammates could attack. The midfielder aimed for Ronaldo and Maguire, United's two biggest aerial threats but Ronaldo, unfortunately, ran into the back of Maguire's head as they both tried to get on the end of the ball.

Fernandes' effort went out for a goal kick and both players ended up off the pitch. A sore one for Ronaldo.
