5 talking points as Rangers roar to seismic victory over Borussia Dortmund on Europa League night for the ages

Rangers produced arguably their greatest EVER result after an incredible thumping of Borussia Dortmund in Germany to put one foot in the Europa League last-16.

The Light Blues stunned the Bundesliga giants on their own patch to win 4-2 and take control of the play-off tie.

It’s the Ibrox side’s rivals Celtic who made so many memories in Seville when they marched to the final of this competition.

But the Scottish champions must now be dreaming of going all the way to this season’s final in the Spanish city after this astonishing night against the tournament favourites.

It was wunderVAR as they twice needed the help of the referee’s monitor for a first half penalty and a disallowed strike for offside.

Giovanni van Bronckhorst and the 500 travelling fans were in dreamland against one of the biggest names in European football.

They were leading 2-0 at the break with two quickfire goals late in the first half as skipper James Tavernier netted the opener from the penalty spot before Alfredo Morelos netted a second.

It was unbelievable stuff against the team sitting second in the Bundesliga and it got better when John Lundstram added another early in the second half.

However, the celebrations had barely died down from that goal when Jude Bellingham netted to bring the hosts back into it but Morelos netted his second before Raphael Guerreiro netted a late stunner.

On paper, even with the crowd reduced due to Covid, it was a daunting task against one of European football’s superpowers but the visitors weren’t in awe.

Van Bronckhorst saw his side start strongly and carved out the best chance of the opening stages which should have seen them take the lead.

Ryan Kent did brilliantly down the left and fed Borna Barisic who just had Gregor Kobel to beat but the Swiss keeper denied the Croatian with his foot.

But there was then a huge let off at the other end when Dan-Axel Zagadou was left totally unmarked by Connor Goldson at Julian Brandt’s corner but the Frenchman’s headed effort was weak.

The home side started to take a grip and Jude Bellingham’s cross was just diverted out of Donyell Malen’s path before Barisic scrambled an effort off the line.

But from hanging on the Light Blues turned this first leg tie completely in their favour with two goals in quick succession late in the first half.

The first came after referee Clement Turpin went to VAR following a senseless handball from Zagadou.

Turpin had no option to but to point to the spot after reviewing it and Tavernier showed great composure to tuck away his eighth of the season.

Gers were in dreamland yet there was better to come before the break as the visitors incredibly doubled their lead.

Tavernier swung in a corner which was flicked towards goal by Joe Aribo and Morelos followed it in to make sure it went over the line.

The home side were unsurprisingly jeered off at the break and it went from bad to worse when Lundstram netted a stunner after yet more great play from Kent to set him up.

Borussia were shellshocked and responded almost immediately as England star Bellingham scored.

But Gers came roaring back again and Morelos netted his second of the night to restore their three-goal lead.

Aribo slipped the ball through to the Colombian and his shot deflected off Zagadou and into the net.

It was initially disallowed for offside but after a check by VAR the goal stood to start the celebrations.

Rangers were chasing a fifth but Guerreiro netted a peach to give them a late lifeline.

Here’s five talking points from the Westfalenstadion:

Best ever?

This is arguably the best result achieved by Rangers away from home in Europe - and maybe even a Scottish side.

The 3-0 win achieved against Lyon by Walter Smith’s side in the Champions League is regarded as the best.

It was in the Europe’s premier competition but Borussia Dortmund are powerhouses in the continent.

And to score four goals on German soil is an incredible feat as Van Bronckhorst got a little bit of revenge for his penalty miss when the Light Blues went out of this competition to the Germans in 1999.

Flyin’ Ryans

It’s obvious that Rangers have missed the presence of Ryan Jack in the middle of the park during a lengthy time out and he showed exactly why with an outstanding display.

But the 29-year-old’s performance was matched by namesake Ryan Kent who turned in one of his best performances for the Light Blues.

Jack bossed the midfield against a team of superstars and Vann Bronckhorst will be desperate to keep him fit going forward.

And Lundstram - who many thought was out the door - was also magnificent beside him in the engine room as he capped his display with an outstanding goal.

Silenced Signal Iduna Park

This is one of the most intimidating arenas in European football when it’s packed and there’s no doubt the home side would have missed their usual backing.

The famous Yellow Wall was missing as the capacity was reduced to just 10,000 fans but that shouldn’t take anything away from the Light Blues.

And the noise came from the 500 travelling fans who couldn’t’ believe what they were seeing from their team.

It’s just a pity more couldn’t savour such a big night but they made themselves heard while it was only jeers that could be heard from the home fans.

Dortmund’s Gers jinx

This was the ninth time the Germans have faced Rangers in European competition and they have managed just one victory in those meetings.

The Light Blues managed a scoreless draws in Dortmund in the first leg of both their 1966 European Cup Winners’ Cup tie and 1982 UEFA Cup tie.

The Light Blues won the return matches in Glasgow - 2-1 and 2-0 respectively - before the teams battled out a couple couple of entertaining 2-2 draws in the 1995/96 Champions League group stage.

And then their only win came in the return leg of their 1999 UEFA Cup clash with a 2-0 victory cancelling out Gers’ win by the same scoreline in the first leg before the Germans went through on penalty kicks with Giovanni van Bronckhorst one of the spot kick sinners for Gers.

From financial disaster to Dortmund dream

Tomorrow will be the 10th anniversary of Rangers’ first game following their plunge into administration.

The fans rallied and packed out Ibrox in the club’s time of need but Kilmarnock piled on the misery with Dean Shiels netting the only goal.

If you had told many of the sell-out crowd that day that exactly a decade later they would not only be playing but BEATING one European football’s powerhouses then few would have believed it.

There has been plenty of pain along the way but this just shows the incredible journey since then.
