5 players Chelsea could sign this summer as part of Thomas Tuchel's transfer rebuild

Chelsea have plenty of work to do in the transfer window with Thomas Tuchel pushing to make major additions so they don't fall further behind their rivals.

Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen both need replacing, while Romelu Lukaku's impending return to Inter Milan on loan will leave another hole to fill. Transfer negotiator Marina Granovskaia's exit means Tuchel and chairman Todd Boehly, acting as interim sporting director, are now fully in charge of recruitment.

And Chelsea are making enquiries about a host of players across Europe as they work down a long list of potential targets. Here, Mirror Sport looks at five players who Chelsea could sign as part of their rebuild this summer.

Raheem Sterling

Chelsea have yet to bid for the Manchester City ace but he is the highest-profile star they have been linked with so far this summer. Sterling has won multiple honours with City, is a key man for England, and a proven goalscorer as well as creator.

Signing him would be a big boost to Tuchel and then new regime, who want a marquee name brought in to show they mean business. Sterling only has one year left on his City contract and would not cost the earth as a result, making him a viable option.

Ousmane Dembele

Tuchel worked with Demeble at Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea made an effort to sign him in the last window while his contract was running out. Now, he is about to be a free agent after refusing to accept Barcelona's latest offer of a new deal.

Barca, who are right up against strict Financial Fair Play rules in La Liga, insist that is their final offer, potentially opening the door to Chelsea. But Dembele is not high on Tuchel's wish list and it is understood his preference is to stay at Barcelona. A firm move by Chelsea could change that but so far it looks like all parties are willing to wait until later in the window on this one.

Jules Kounde

It is no secret Chelsea want the Sevilla defender. They pushed hard for him before, and he remains their top target. Kounde has already agreed terms on a potential move and is available for around £56m - significantly less than his full £69m release clause.

Sources in Spain claim that the Frenchman favours a move to Barcelona over Chelsea, but the Catalan club would struggle to reach his asking price. Barcelona could make several fringe players available as makeweights to a deal but so far Sevilla insist they would do a straight cash transaction.

Matthijs De Ligt

Chelsea will not pay the £103m release clause in the Juventus defender's contract, which still has two years left to run. But the kicker here is that De Ligt is at an impasse with Juve in talks over a new deal, plunging his future into doubt.

As a result the Italians could decide to sell this summer and there is an acceptance that they would have to accept a lower fee for the Dutchman if he decides he wants to leave. Chelsea will wait to see what develops here but there would have to be a significant drop in the player's value for this one to happen.

Raphinha

Leeds star Raphinha wants to join Barcelona but the Catalan club can't currently afford to do a deal because of Financial Fair Play restrictions. And the longer that situation continues the more chance there is of Raphinha signing for somebody else. Arsenal and Tottenham have also enquired about the Brazil winger but Chelsea are another option amid reports he would prefer to join the Blues if a move to Barca collapses.

But the arrival of a player like Raphinha, Sterling or Dembele would surely spell the end of the road for Christian Pulisic or Hakim Ziyech at Stamford Bridge.
