HYDERABAD: In a major crackdown on the business of fake birth certificates, the S R Nagar police on Thursday cracked down on the gang and arrested five people including a GHMC data entry operator. The main accused, Aizaz Khasim who is an assistant medical officer of health (AMOH), is absconding.
According to West Zone DCP, Joel Davis, a special team acted on specific information and found out about the forged birth certificate racket.
“So far we have only come across instances where birth certificates were obtained through fraudulent means. We will have to verify if death certificates were also issued,” the DCP said.
Police arrested, A Satish (36), a GHMC contract data entry operator, Khairthabad office, on Wednesday and based on the information provided by him, cops arrested four agents, Md Rasool (42) private employee from B S Maktha, Syed Hussain Iqbal (49) private worker from New Malakpet, Arif Ahmed (56) civil engineer from Masabtank, Md Rasheed (43) private worker from Ahmed Nagar on Thursday.
The main accused Aizaz Khasim, who is an AMOH with GHMC, Khairatabad, and another agent Ankit of Secunderabad are absconding. Police seized four birth certificates issued through fraudulent means, six cell phones and ₹19,400 cash from the accused.
Police said that the normal process for obtaining a birth certificate is to approach the customer service centre of GHMC with a hospital discharge summary and fill in an application with supporting documents of the applicant. After clearance by the AMOH, the data entry operator verifies the details again and uploads them on to the GHMC server. The certificate can be obtained from the applicants at Mee-Seva centres. The procedure takes about 15 days.
However, in this case, the agents were sending the details of the applicant to the AMOH and the GHMC data entry operator through mobile phones without supporting documents, including hospital discharge summary, and getting certificates within one day from Mee-Seva centres, DCP said.
