5 England players who could earn bumper IPL paydays as 30 stars enter mega auction

Of the 318 overseas players who have registered for this year's Indian Premier League mega auction, 30 of them are English.

Jos Buttler and Moeen Ali have already been retained by their respective franchises, with Buttler set to represent Rajasthan Royals and Moeen looking to retain the title with Chennai Super Kings.

Several of England 's top stars are hoping to join them at the tournament and earn bumper paydays in the process.

However, several mainstays in the Test team have opted not to enter the auction, including captain Joe Root, vice-captain Ben Stokes and Chris Woakes, while Sam Curran is also missing as he continues his recovery from injury.

Of the 30 who have decided to enter the auction, Mirror Sport has taken a look at five who could be picked up.

Jonny Bairstow

It can be difficult to earn an IPL deal as an overseas opener given the dearth of domestic top-order options that franchises have to choose from.

However, Bairstow benefits from having a stellar IPL record, the fact he tends to bat in the middle order for England and his ability as a wicketkeeper.

Bairstow played his first IPL match in 2019 and has gone on to score 1,038 runs in 28 innings at an average of 41.52 and a strike rate of 142.19.

The 32-year-old is also an excellent player of spin and his versatility should make him an attractive option for a number of franchises.

Eoin Morgan

Although he had a poor second half of last year's IPL with the bat, Morgan led his Kolkata Knight Riders side all the way to the final after taking over as skipper midway through the tournament.

Unlike some of the other England players in the auction, Morgan will definitely be available for the entire competition, having not played first-class cricket since 2019.

A power hitter down the order, Morgan might not have an outstanding IPL record but he remains a quality player and will be hoping for another stint in the tournament.

Mark Wood

As a fast bowler who can consistently hit speeds of over 90mph, Wood could find himself in demand in the auction given the success speedsters like Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje have had in recent tournaments.

Wood's displays in the Ashes will have impressed potential employers and he is hopeful that a stint in the IPL will benefit him ahead of the T20 World Cup in October.

He said: "If I look ahead to the World Cup and I can learn something in the IPL, if I can put myself in pressure situations and try and get better for the end of the year, that’ll be good."

Liam Livingstone

England's breakout star last year, Livingstone is an explosive hitter capable of batting anywhere in the top order and a more-than-useful spinner.

In the recent T20 World Cup, Livingstone showcased his all-round prowess as he scored at a strike-rate of 158.62, the highest of England's frontline batters, and picked up six wickets at an average of 14.33.

He has only played nine IPL games so far, but the 28-year-old is one of the most exciting talents in T20 cricket right now and his ability with both bat and ball will surely mean he is in demand at the auction.

Tymal Mills

Made a millionaire by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the 2017 IPL, Mills only played five games and struggled with injury.

However, five years on from that experience, the 29-year-old is a much-improved player and his combination of express pace, an excellent slower ball and the left-arm angle could make him a hot commodity at this year's auction.

Mills also boasts an impressive record at the death, with his tactic of bowling into the pitch as opposed to trying to nail yorkers making him one of the most effective bowlers at the back end of an innings.
