Cellular Jail, Port Blair, Andaman Islands
The British built Cellular Jail between 1896 and 1906 specifically to break people. The architecture was designed for isolation, 693 individual cells arranged in seven radiating wings so that no prisoner could see another. Political detainees sent here under the colonial penal system included Bal Gangadhar Tilak's associates, Vinayak Damodar Savarkar, and hundreds of freedom fighters who were given no trial and no timeline for release.
