It’s a sad day for fans of The Pogues.
Shane McGowan, the longtime frontman of the punk band, died at the age of 65, per a statement from his family on The Pogues’ Instagram page.
“It is with the deepest sorrow and heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of Shane MacGowan,” it read. “Shane died peacefully at 3am this morning (30 November, 2023) with his wife Victoria and family by his side.”
He combined Irish heritage with punk for a sound that was a success in the 1980s. And just this week, an adaptation of one of the band’s most beloved songs (see below) hit No. 1 on the Billboard charts.
