5 Caves in India That Go Deeper Underground Than Expected and Reward Every Kilometre of Spelunking

Krem Liat Prah, Meghalaya, The Longest Cave in the Indian Subcontinent

At 31 kilometres of surveyed passage, Krem Liat Prah in the East Jaintia Hills is the longest cave in South Asia. Tourists who arrive at the entrance expecting a short walk with a guide come out two hours later having seen perhaps 400 metres of it. The rest belongs to cavers with SRT (single rope technique) gear and a permit from the Meghalaya Adventurers' Association. Inside, the cave connects to the Krem Um Im system, creating a network of underground rivers, breakdown chambers, and fossil passages coated in flowstone. The water runs cold and fast in the monsoon months; serious exploration happens between November and March. Bring a wetsuit. The depth here rewards patience more than fitness, the cave is wide and horizontal in sections, but the sheer distance means you will camp underground if you want to reach the far chambers.
