5 best stand-up comedy specials on Netflix to stream right now

Netflix streaming logo red.

Many of us suffer from a chronic inability to choose what to watch the moment we open Netflix. However, stand-up comedy specials are the perfect antidote when nothing else appeals. Generally clocking in at about an hour, they are low-commitment one-offs that you can enjoy casually — even if you’re just looking for something to keep you company while you’re doomscrolling (if that’s your thing).

While Netflix's library is vast, we’ve cut through the noise to highlight five of the most essential stand-up specials you need to watch. Our choices cover a diverse range of comedians whose lived experiences heavily influence their storytelling. These aren't just random picks; they represent the best of the platform’s current offerings.

What ties these five performers together is a singular, undeniable ability to make you laugh out loud. Very loud. If you're ready to stop scrolling, these are the sets to stream right now.

'Sarah Millican: Late Bloomer'

Sarah Millican is a British comedian whose comedy should translate well to other countries. While she does have a north-east English accent that you may need to get used to, once you do, you’ll likely fall for her innate wit and charm. And her stories and experiences should be pretty much universal, albeit with a British twist.

Millican isn’t trying to reinvent comedy here; her only aim is to make you laugh by talking about her life in her trademark conversational style. And by the end of the set, you’ll probably want to spend more time in her company, and will likely seek out more of her standup sets on streaming services.

'Bill Burr: Live at Red Rocks'

One of the best-known comedians on the planet, Bill Burr is a master of his craft. However, his style of standup, which sees him angrily rant about anything and everything, won’t be to everyone’s tastes. If it is to your tastes, then this live performance will blow you away. It’s a masterclass of traditional American standup, meticulously constructed to take you on a journey.

While "Live at Red Rocks" could be classified as a traditional standup set compared to the more modern specials, it’s anything but ordinary. Burr’s combative style seeps through, bringing the audience both in the room and at home with him. There are no gimmicks and no meaningful messages; just straight-up comedy crafted by a master of standup.

'Ali Wong: Hard Knock Wife'

Ali Wong has several stand-up specials on Netflix. But "Hard Knock Wife" stands out for me due to Wong being heavily pregnant at the time of recording. That provides the catalyst for the special, as the American comedian talks about motherhood, marriage, and gender dynamics, all in her trademark blunt and confident style.

Wong sets out to show how a strong, confident woman can attempt to have it all, and her swagger while standing on stage with a big baby bump visualizes that. There are jokes galore, setups and callbacks and themes that build together to a natural conclusion. In short, "Hard Knock Wife" is a stand-up special that you will remember for a long time.

'Hasan Minhaj: Homecoming King'

Hasan Minhaj initially came to people’s attention on "The Daily Show." Since then, the American comedian has presented his own show on Netflix and starred in several stand-up specials. "Homecoming King" is my pick of them all, as it’s the one that resonated with me the most. Minhaj’s background as someone born in the U.S. to Indian-Muslim parents is the core which his stand-up is built around.

Unlike some of the other standup specials on this list, "Homecoming King" is driven by storytelling more than scattergun jokes, with a germ of the truth augmented by exaggeration for comedy effect. But throughout it all, the special is very funny, with the audience invited to both laugh at and with Minhaj as he explores some heavy themes.

'Michelle Wolf: Joke Show'

Michelle Wolf may best be known for having an extremely acerbic wit. This stood her in good stead when she turned heads at the 2018 White House Correspondents' Dinner. Her Netflix special builds on that performance, with her slightly demented stage persona drawing you into the performance.

As the name suggests, "Joke Show" is a riot of jokes, with one-liners coming thick and fast. If you don’t find one punchline funny, don’t worry, as another will be along in a few seconds. Topics and tones shift quickly, preventing you from focusing too heavily on any of them. And the whole set is a tightly written, consistently funny hour that will leave you breathless from laughing.
