The 49ers on Thursday announced a pair of corresponding roster moves. They placed veteran cornerback Terrance Mitchell on injured reserve, and signed veteran CB Anthony Averett to fill the vacancy on the roster.
Averett played his college football at Alabama and joined the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Ravens in the 2018 draft. He spent four years in Baltimore before joining the Raiders last season. In five years he’s played in 57 games with 27 starts and racked up 114 tackles, three interceptions and 23 pass breakups. All three of his INTs came in the 2021 campaign when he played and started a career-high 14 games for Baltimore.
With the Raiders last season Averett started six of the seven games he played and posted 13 tackles with one pass breakup. His season was cut short by a pair of stints on IR.
San Francisco added Mitchell on July 25 when they started camp. The nature of his injury is unknown, but his placement on IR in early August means he’s ineligible to suit up for the 49ers this year even if his injury is not season-ending.
