The San Francisco 49ers are experiencing a season they would like to forget. To make matters worse, star left tackle Trent Williams has been shut down for the rest of the season because of an ankle injury.

Head coach Kyle Shanahan announced on Monday that Williams will not play in the team’s final two games of the season.
“He won’t be playing in these next two games, so I guess that is an update,” Shanahan said via 49ers.com. “He hasn’t been able to improve enough to get him out there, and we don’t see that happening enough in these two weeks, especially with the situation we’re in.”
Williams injured his left ankle on Nov. 17 during the 49ers’ 20-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
In addition to Williams, Aaron Banks (right MCL) and backup tackle Jaylon Moore (quad) will also miss the 49ers’ final two games.
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw (calf/Achilles) is in danger of being done for the season after suffering calf soreness in Week 16. Shanahan hinted that Greenlaw’s season is “most likely” over.
“I have to wait to talk to Dre on that,” Shanahan said. “We’ll still make sure to see exactly how he is doing because right now we have it as just soreness. That will definitely be a decision that I’ll leave up to Dre depending on what his health is.”

Before the 49ers even stepped foot on the field in Miami, their hopes of making the postseason ended.
The Los Angeles Rams’ win over the New York Jets and the Washington Commanders’ victory over the Philadelphia Eagles eliminated the 49ers from postseason contention.
This marks the first time since the 2020 NFL season that the 49ers will miss the postseason. The 49ers famously lost in last season’s Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs.
The 49ers went on to lose 29-17 to the Miami Dolphins.
Before San Francisco begins the offseason, they must play two more games. First up for the 49ers (6-9) is a Monday Night Football matchup against the Detroit Lions (13-2).
