The 49ers are restructuring running back Christian McCaffrey’s contract according to NFL Media’s Field Yates.
McCaffrey’s restructure frees up $8.576 million in cap space for the 49ers this season. His cap hit was originally slated to be $12 million for this season, although he didn’t have any guaranteed money left on the four-year contract he signed with the Panthers in 2020.
San Francisco opted to push some of his money into the future by dropping his cap number this year. The 49ers were working with just $1,916,339 in effective cap space going into the draft according to Over the Cap. Now they’ll have north of $10 million to get their draft picks signed and still have a little room to maneuver during the season.
