The latest indicator that Jimmy Garoppolo’s time with the 49ers is winding down despite the club’s inability to trade him came from new quarterbacks coach Brian Griese.
Griese on Wednesday told reporters he’s working with the three QBs in the building including Trey Lance, Nate Sudfeld and Brock Purdy, but hasn’t had any contact with Garoppolo according to NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco.
Garoppolo is still under contract with the 49ers and the team’s inability to trade him, combined with their insistence they won’t trade him for nothing has led to some speculation they intend on keeping him on the roster this year.
However, between head coach Kyle Shanahan saying the team still intends on trading Garoppolo, and the new QB coach doing zero work with him, it’s hard to believe San Francisco will bring the injured signal caller back into the fold during the regular season.
Perhaps something changes as training camp draws closer, but all signs are pointing to the 49ers-Garoppolo relationship ending regardless of what his trade market looks like once he’s healthy enough to throw.
