The San Francisco 49ers’ season ended with a 31-7 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship Game on Sunday and their quarterback situation looks pretty bad.
Quarterback Brock Purdy, who led the 49ers to seven straight wins before the loss to the Eagles to end their season, suffered a significant elbow injury.
Eagles linebacker Haason Reddick hit Purdy’s arm on a pass attempt in the first quarter, causing Purdy to have to leave the game. He later returned after his backup, Josh Johnson, left the game to be evaluated for a concussion.
The news was bad on Monday. He suffered a complete tear of his ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow.
He will be out at least six months after surgery.
The 49ers’ quarterback position is a mess.
Purdy is out several months.
Jimmy Garoppolo, who broke his foot and missed the final eight games, will be a free agent.
Trey Lance, the Niners’ first-round pick in 2021 and starter to begin 2022, had two surgeries on his ankle but should be ready to practice by the time the offseason program begins.
But the 49ers could be a player in the quarterback market this offseason, so it will be something for Cardinals fans to watch.
