49ers injury update: Brock Purdy officially questionable vs. Bengals

The 49ers are officially listing quarterback Brock Purdy and left tackle Trent Williams as questionable for Sunday’s game against the Bengals at Levi’s Stadium.

Purdy was a full participant in Friday’s practice according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. That’s a good sign for his progress through concussion protocol, but he’ll still need to clear the NFL’s concussion protocol Saturday in order to suit up against Cincinnati. That he’s even questionable is a small miracle considering when his concussion took place. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter only 25 percent of players the last two years have returned to play the week after a concussion. Purdy would not only return the next week, but would be doing so on a short week since the 49ers played Monday night.

Williams’ status is also good news for San Francisco. He was listed as doubtful ahead of Week 7 after spraining his ankle in Week 6. Shanahan said the turf playing surface in Minnesota played a role in the left tackle’s absence.

With the team back home on natural grass Williams has a better shot to play. He didn’t practice at all during the week and was listed as a non-participant all three days.

Deebo Samuel has also been ruled out with a shoulder injury. He was expected to miss both Weeks 7 and 8 with the hope of returning after the Week 9 bye.

Shanahan didn’t give any indication as to how close Williams is to being ready to play. He did say if Purdy passes the final concussion protocol step Saturday he would definitely start Sunday.
