49ers Injury News: Brock Purdy Hurts Elbow, Likely Out In Week 18

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy suffered an elbow injury in Monday night’s loss to the Detroit Lions. Will Purdy play in Week 18 against the Arizona Cardinals?

Brock Purdy Unlikely To Play In Week 18

With the 49ers out of playoff contention, Purdy is unlikely to play on Sunday against the Cardinals.

However, Purdy avoided a major injury. Head coach Kyle Shanahan said Purdy’s MRI showed no structural damage and avoided “long-term issues.”

“[It’s a] right elbow contusion with nerve inflammation,” Shanahan said at Tuesday’s press conference via 49ers.com. “[He’s] most likely going to miss this week but no long-term issues. The UCL looks fine.

“I’m relieved, but I wasn’t too concerned. I wasn’t too worried about it just with the information we had last night, so it was good to just hear the same thing today.”

Purdy suffered the injury late in the fourth quarter of Monday’s 40-34 loss. Purdy went to the sidelines after being sacked by Detroit’s Brian Branch. Purdy was struggling to throw the football and did not return to the game.

Backup quarterback Josh Dobbs finished the game. Though Shanahan has not made an official decision, Dobbs will likely start in the 49ers’ finale against Arizona.

Purdy completed 27 of 35 passes for 377 yards, three touchdowns, and two interceptions against the Lions.

Brock Purdy Contract

With Purdy’s season likely over, the 49ers now must decide if they plan to extend their quarterback.

The former seventh-round pick will become extension-eligible on January 6, 2025. Purdy is entering the final year of his rookie contract, with a base salary of $1.1 million in 2025.

Dallas’ Dak Prescott reset the market with a four-year, $240 million extension in September.

Purdy is not expected to reset the market. However, the going rate for a quarterback extension is around $50 million per year. Detroit’s Jared Goff, Green Bay’s Jordan Love, Jacksonville’s Trevor Lawrence, and Miami’s Tua Tagovailoa all signed extensions worth between $53 million and $55 million.

Philadelphia’s Jalen Hurts makes $51 million annually. Arizona’s Kyler Murray is the next highest-paid quarterback at $46.1 million per year.

The Cardinals (7-9) host the 49ers (6-10) on Jan. 5 at 4:25 p.m. ET.
