49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided an update on Nick Bosa’s status for Week 1 after the star defensive end signed a new contract which made him the NFL’s highest-paid defensive player.
Shanahan was asked by reporters on Wednesday if there was any chance Bosa would not be available for San Francisco’s season opener against the Steelers, to which he had a humorous response.
“He would have to have a beer belly and be out of shape or something. And that’s not in Bosa’s DNA,” said Shanahan, via David Lombardi of The Athletic.
The 49ers open their season on the road in Pittsburgh at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, Sept. 10.
Bosa had been holding out from the team while negotiations over his new contract dragged on. Despite not participating in training camp or the preseason, the 25-year-old was working out and staying in shape.
Bosa’s new contract is a five-year, $170 million deal, which includes $122.5 million in guarantees. The organization was able to get the deal done just four days before their 2023 season gets underway.
Per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports, Shanahan told reporters that the three-time Pro Bowler is not currently with the team, “but he's trying to get here as fast as possible.” When Bosa does arrive, the 49ers coach indicated he’s expected to suit up and take the field in Week 1.
