49ers’ Brock Purdy Calls Unexpected MVP Consideration an ‘Honor’

Brock Purdy has emerged as a top candidate for the 2023 NFL MVP, and his 49ers teammates haven’t been shy to advocate for the quarterback.

The second-year quarterback currently holds the second best odds (+181) behind Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott to win the award, according to SI Sportsbook.

Purdy humbly addressed the MVP talks on Tuesday.

“When I get asked the question and stuff, it comes to mind, and the first thing is what an honor,” Purdy said Tuesday on the Bay Area radio station KNBR [via 49ersWebzone.com]. “I’m not taking anything away from that. It’s what an honor, and very honored to hear that.

“But at the same time, I’m trying to do what I can for this team, for this Sunday, and for this practice or this meeting. I’m not getting caught up in awards and stuff like that. If anything, I look at it more as a team award. I have a great surrounding cast. I’ve got guys around me that are all making plays, a great defense, great special teams. And so that’s a testament to the team that I have.”

In the past week, 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel said Purdy being the “No. 1” choice for the award “ain’t even up for debate.” Left tackle Trent Williams harped on about how Purdy could be considered a “unanimous MVP” if he wasn’t reminded how he was the last pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
