49ers add offensive line help in Mel Kiper Jr.’s NFL Mock Draft 1.0

While the San Francisco 49ers are preparing for Jared Goff and the Detroit Lions in the NFC Championship game, draft season is quickly heating up with mock drafts beginning to drop. Legendary ESPN draft analyst Mel Kiper Jr. recently released his first mock of the 2024 draft window.

With the 49ers on the clock with the final pick of the first round at No. 32 overall, Kiper Jr. addressed the offensive line. At No. 32, Kiper Jr. went to the SEC, inking Georgia offensive tackle Amarius Mims to the 49ers to end the first round. According to Kiper Jr., Mims has the traits to become a future Pro Bowl-caliber player.

Via ESPN:

There’s some risk with taking Mims, as he started only eight games in college because of injuries and NFL picks in front of him on the Georgia depth chart. But his ceiling is incredibly high; at 6-foot-7, 340 pounds, he has the traits to be a future Pro Bowler if he can put it all together. Mims didn’t allow a single sack in 372 career pass-blocking snaps.

The former five-star high school prospect played three seasons with Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs, seeing time on the field in both 2022 and 2023. After starting the season as a reserve, Mims started in both of Georgia’s college football playoff games on their way to a national championship in 2022.

The 6-foot-7 right tackle 2023 campaign was limited to seven games due to injuries. After suffering a high-ankle sprain against South Carolina, Mims underwent tight-rope surgery. Mims suffered an injury in the first half of the SEC championship game against Alabama. Mims didn’t suit up for Georgia’s Orange Bowl contest against Florida State.

Despite only playing in seven games, Mims posted a 75.7 overall grade from Pro Football Focus and did not allow a sack while protecting Carson Beck in 2023.
