Liz Truss has announced she is resigning as Prime Minister after just 45 days in office. Her chaotic stint at the helm, during which she lost the confidence of Tory MPs and the public as she oversaw economic turbulence and a revolt within her party, came to an end after crunch talks with the leader of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady on Thursday.
There will now be a leadership election to find her successor, with a new PM potentially being appointed as early as next Monday. Former Chancellor Rishi Sunak and ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman - who quit just a day before Truss - are among those expected to stand, while there could even be a return for former Prime Minister Boris Johnson just weeks after he stepped down from the post.
Truss's 45-day stint is the shortest of any British Prime Minister in history, as she fell well short of the previous record of 119 days set by George Canning, who died in office in 1827.
