€400 payment to Irish households for accommodating Ukrainian refugees still not up and running

A scheme to offer Irish households a monthly payment of €400 to help with added costs of accommodating a Ukrainian refugee is expected to open for applications next week.

Cabinet Ministers previously championed the extra cash as households struggle with the cost of living crisis.

It comes as the Government is scrambling to find accommodation for refugees after Ukrainians were forced to sleep at the old terminal building at Dublin Airport.

Justice Minister Helen McEntee previously said she believed a payment may incentivise people to take in a refugee fleeing the war in Ukraine.

But households will have to wait longer to receive the monthly payment.

The Irish Mirror has confirmed that no applications have been made for the €400 payment yet because the legislation to allow the payment process only passed through all stages in the Oireachtas on Wednesday.

This is despite the scheme getting approval back in May by Cabinet.

A spokesman for the Department of Children said: “No applications have been made yet. “The Civil Law (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill 2022, which includes provision for the financial contribution scheme, completed all stages in the Oireachtas on Wednesday.

“At time of writing, the Bill has been sent to the President for signature, after which regulations to enable the scheme to be commenced will be signed by the Minister for Children, Equality, Disability, Integration & Youth.

“The scheme is expected to commence next week and payments will be made shortly thereafter.”

The payments to households will be administered by the Department of Social Protection.

The payment will apply retrospectively to March, 4, 2022 and is linked to a six month commitment to host.
