Cabinet have signed off on a €400 monthly payment to households who are accommodating Ukrainian refugees.
Children’s Minister Roderic O’Gorman said the move will require legislation but that the Government hopes the scheme will be open this month.
He explained it will be an opt-in scheme and he will be working with the Social Protection Department.

Minster O’Gorman said those who want to avail of the monthly payment will need to provide their PPS, the Ukrainian refugees’ PPS and the ericode of the premises.
He also confirmed that payments will be backdated for people who have been caring for refugees.
He also said that penalties will occur for anyone who makes false declarations and tries to game the system.
The Government has decided to pay people who are willing to open their doors to help house Ukrainian refugees due to the rise in the cost of living.
Justice Minister Helen McEntee has previously said that perhaps a payment might encourage people to help the humanitarian crisis.
Minister O’Gorman said that he thinks a significant number of families won’t take up the payment.
He said that the cost of the scheme could be €4.8 million over a one year period.
