The forging of the 2023 Houston Texans continues.
The first day of training camp was going to warrant optimism regardless of how the team actually performed. With the combination of football returning and the club looking to a fan favorite to take over as coach, the first day of camp was going to engender positivity on Kirby Drive.
As the Texans worked through their second day of camp at Houston Methodist Training Center, the work on the field created its own momentum. Any hype that transpired was purely due to basic football, not the elation after a long layoff.
Here are four takeaways from the second day of camp:
Steven Nelson gets Texans' first interception of camp
Most would not care that Davis Mills threw the first interception of training camp. Instead it would be interesting to know who picked off the third-year signal caller.
According to D.J. Bien-Aime from ESPN, cornerback Steven Nelson came away with the first pick of camp. While it may not bode well for Mills, who has aspirations to secure the starting quarterback job, the turnover does indicate the potential Houston’s secondary could have in 2023.
First-team linebackers
According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans had their first-team linebacking corps consist of second-year Christian Harris, Christian Kirksey, and former Pro Bowler Denzel Perryman, who the Texans signed in late in free agency.
Jalen Ward or Jimmie Pitre
According to Texans Wire alumnus Cole Thompson, Jimmie Ward and Jalen Pitre lined up in virtually the same spots on the backend. With the 10-year veteran and the former 2022 second-rounder being able to play both spots at safety, it should bring more flexibility in the secondary and also provide for more coverages.
Coach Johnathan Joseph
Former Texans cornerback Johnathan Joseph was spotted on the practice field at Houston Methodist Training Center helping coach the cornerbacks. The two-time Pro Bowler is one of the Texans’ Bill Walsh Coaching Diversity fellows for training camp.
