The Jacksonville Jaguars made significant cuts this week, and are currently under the 53-man threshold they need to be at before the regular season. After a training camp where they evaluated the talent on the roster top to bottom, the team is now squarely focused on winning football games in the regular season. As of now, they are exceptionally thin at nose tackle , and could use another running back in case injuries play a factor early in their 2022 campaign.
With cuts coming down from across the league, here is a look at who Jacksonville may target in the next week and a half before the season officially begins:
RB Phillip Lindsay
Lindsay was an elite playmaker for the Denver Broncos in recent seasons, but has failed to garner much interest as a free agent heading into this season. The Indianapolis Colts signed him back in May, but unexpectedly released him following training camp and the preseason. He is now available to negotiate a contract, and as injuries at the running back position played a factor for Jacksonville last year and in the preseason, they would be wise to secure Lindsay’s talents for their 2022 campaign just in case anything happens.
DT Sheldon Richardson
This former first-round pick is likely on the back-end of his career, but could still be a productive presence on any team’s defensive line. He played in Minnesota last year, starting seven games and recording just under 40 tackles for the Vikings in a rotational role. With as little depth as the Jaguars have at defensive tackle, Richardson would make perfect sense as a late-stage addition to the team before the regular season kicks off.
OT Eric Fisher
The former first-overall pick would fit right in with Trevor Lawrence and Travon Walker on a sort of theme team of the NFL draft’s top overall selections. Fisher never quite became a star in the league the way Jacksonville expects Lawrence and Walker to, but as an offensive tackle, he never really needed to. He has blocked for the likes of Alex Smith and Patrick Mahomes in his time with the Kansas City Chiefs, so Fisher knows what it takes to keep an offense humming from his spot on the line.
Jacksonville might not be desperate for a starting tackle, but Fisher’s availability and experience could bring a new dynamic to the Jaguars’ young offense.
DT Ndamukong Suh
If the Jaguars managed to bring in Suh to compete for a spot on their defensive line it could be a best-case scenario for both parties in the 2022 season. His exceptional abilities make him a constant threat in the pass rush, and with so much talent already present on Jacksonville’s front seven, Suh could put the defense over the top on paper. It might be a pipe dream to think Suh would make his way to Duval County, but if Jacksonville can make him an enticing offer with the cap space they currently have, he could see a renaissance in the AFC South this season.
