A Startup Born in a College Dorm
The journey of Giga began in 2023 at IIT Kharagpur, where Varun Vummadi and his friend Esha Manideep decided to start a company together.
In Vummadi’s words:
“Esha and I started Giga in our college dorm. At first, I just wanted to start a company with my best friend.” What started as a simple idea gradually transformed into a startup focused on building voice-based AI agents for businesses. Today, Giga operates out of San Francisco and is gaining recognition in the global AI ecosystem.
Turning Down Big Opportunities
Before fully committing to entrepreneurship, Vummadi made two major career decisions:
He declined a $525,000 job offer from a high-frequency trading firm.
He chose not to pursue a PhD at Stanford University.
These decisions weren’t easy. At a startup event in Bengaluru, it was revealed that his parents were initially not supportive of his unconventional path. Over time, however, they came to understand his vision.
Early Struggles and Skill Building
Vummadi’s journey wasn’t built on privilege. According to Jared Friedman from Y Combinator, he came from a modest background. Before launching Giga, he had already made over $100,000 by participating in Kaggle competitions—demonstrating both technical skill and determination.
Rapid Growth and Funding Success
After joining Y Combinator, Giga began scaling quickly. The company raised $61 million in a Series A funding round led by Redpoint Ventures, marking a major milestone in its growth. Friedman described Giga as one of the “first great AI companies to come out of India,” highlighting its potential in the global market.
Controversy and Allegations
Despite its growth, Giga has not been without controversy. A former employee made several allegations on social media, claiming:
Internal dashboards showed lower revenue than reported
Concerns over role clarity and compensation
Long working hours
Access to 70 GB of internal data allegedly containing evidence of wrongdoing
These claims brought significant public attention to the company.
Company Response and Denial
Giga strongly denied all allegations.
In an official statement, the company said:
“A small group of individuals has illegally obtained confidential company information and is now attempting to extort and blackmail Giga.” The company further claimed that these individuals were threatening to manipulate data and release misleading information unless paid $3 million in cryptocurrency. Giga confirmed that law enforcement authorities had been informed and that legal action would follow.
Support from Investors
Backing the company, Y Combinator partner Jared Friedman dismissed the allegations, stating:
“That was totally false.”
A Story Still Unfolding
The journey of Varun Vummadi and Giga reflects the complex reality of modern startups—where ambition, risk, success, and controversy often go hand in hand. From a dorm room idea to a globally recognized AI company, the story continues to evolve, capturing attention not just for what has been achieved, but for the decisions that made it possible.
