4 Costco Spring Items Seniors Shouldn’t Buy — and Where To Get Them Instead

If buying in bulk becomes your love language in retirement, you may be great at saving money, but you also may miss out on the nuances of certain spending habits that will better suit your budget. Of course, Costco is known for big savings and seasonal deals, but not every Costco spring item is a smart buy for seniors.

Whether you’re trying to stretch a fixed income, avoid wasteful bulk purchases or shop more intentionally, GOBankingRates has found four Costco spring items seniors may want to skip, along with better alternatives you can buy right now at other popular retailers.

Spring Accent Rugs

  • Costco option: Spring Hooked Accent Rug for $24.99
  • GOBankingRates’ pick: Faptoena Spring Door Mat for $24.99 at Amazon

Spring is a great time to update your rugs and door mats so you can avoid trudging in muddy footprints that come with seasonal changes and rainy weather. Instead of the Costco option for an accent rug, the better option may be to order online from Amazon. It’s a bit more weather and stain resistant, which can be much needed in spring.

Fresh Flower Arrangements

  • Costco option: Easter Spring Quad Roses Fresh Cut Floral, 50-stems for $57.99
  • GOBankingRates’ pick: Assorted Color Roses, 6 stems for $6.77 at Walmart

Nothing says spring has sprung quite like a bunch of fresh floral arrangements throughout your house. Though Costco’s option isn’t much more expensive per unit (about $1.15 per rose), this big bulk order may not be the best value as these flowers have a short shelf life. Instead, opt for Walmart’s selection of roses that you can mix and match with colors and choose the quantity that works better for you at about $1.13 a rose.

Stoneware Sets

  • Costco option: Darbie Angell Happy Spring Summer 9-piece Stoneware Set for $84.99
  • GOBankingRates’ pick: Tabletops Unlimited Farmhouse 12-piece Stoneware Set for $78 from Macy’s

If you are revamping your dinnerware set to get ready for spring and summer gatherings, keep in mind that good quality collections can set you back when you break down the price per unit. Though both Costco and Macy’s are both high quality and well-reviewed, Costco’s price per unit is $9.44 per piece, whereas Macy’s comes in at $6.50 per piece.

Men’s Shoes

  • Costco option: Kirkland Signature Men’s Sneaker for $32.99
  • GOBankingRates’ pick: Knit Deck Loafers for Men for $22 at Old Navy

Smart senior shoppers know that the best deals for summer kicks come in spring. You’ll want a lightweight option with good traction. Both Costco and Old Navy have great options, but instead of dealing with lacing up your shoes, opt for these stylish loafer slip-ons from Old Navy that will also save you a few bucks

Editor’s note: Pricing is accurate as of April 2, 2026. Pricing and availability are subject to change.
