Four children were injured — two of their critically — Saturday night when a driver ran a red light and struck the car they were riding in South Chicago.

Two girls, ages 6 and 9, were ejected when a white sedan slammed into the passenger side of the SUV they were riding in about 7:20 p.m. in the 7900 block of South Yates Boulevard, Chicago police said.

Both were taken to Comer Children’s Hospital in critical condition, police said.

Two other girls, 5 and 9, who were also riding in the SUV, suffered minor injuries and were taken to Lurie Children’s Hospital in good condition, police said. A 26-year-old woman who was driving the SUV was not injured.

The driver of the white sedan didn’t stop afterwards and continued driving north on Yates Boulevard, police said. It was found abandoned 30 minutes later in the 7700 block of South Oglesby Avenue.

There was no one in custody.
