Town hall bosses in Trafford have accepted £4.75m of funding to deliver a safer ‘active travel scheme’ on one of the main arterial routes through the borough in and out of Manchester. Cash for the Talbot Road scheme is from the Mayor's Challenge Fund. The decision by Trafford council will enable the work for the scheme to begin soon.
It will deliver three upgraded ‘cyclops’ junctions at the junction of Talbot Road and White City Way, Great Stone Road and the A56/Chester Road, providing priority to people walking, wheeling or cycling along the route ‘in a seamless journey’.
“The scheme is of key strategic importance in Trafford and forms a major component of the planned active travel infrastructure, which will provide a central spine enhancing connectivity between Trafford’s Civic Quarter, key development sites and Manchester city centre,” background papers say.

“It also forms part of the long-term vision for the North Corridor - a route spanning from the M60 junction 7 via Talbot Road, through to Salford and onto Manchester via the A56 Old Chester Road to the Cornbrook junction.”
There will be a ‘phased delivery approach’ to include upgrading all the ‘light segregation’ with ‘fully permanent segregated cycle lanes’
The documents say ‘[The scheme] aligns with the approved council strategy to increase the numbers of people walking, wheeling and cycling across Trafford through the development and delivery of improved accessible and safer cycling and walking infrastructure’.
“By providing alternative forms of travel and having effective and efficient transport infrastructure also supports the corporate objective of supporting people out of poverty and addressing our climate crisis,” they say.
